5/12/2009 Final blog post

1.How does the revised version of our class differ from the first version?

It was totally different except its schedule for essay. The revised version has changed topic for essay. Students use technology to participate in a class. The class looked more interesting, and free to share opinions.

2.Which one do you prefer? Why?

I prefer the revised one. It provided much more flexible schedule and interesting topics.

3.What could be changed next time? Why?

I can't thinkg any other changes better than now.

4.What did you like/dislike about the Clark 111 classroom itself?

I liked the laptop they provide. There are both of pc and mac so user can choose whatever they are familiar with. Also, the atmosphere was good.
However, it's better to use the monitor, located in front of room, more frequently.

4/23/2009 Assessing assessment

While I was researching, research alter my thesis statement. Therefore, I need to research more to focus on altered thesis statement. Book is the very first one that I have to find in order to complete research, and then assessing it.

I don't think I did well at this time. As Tiffany, my peer-review said, I describes how I the research will be used for paper rather than assess why these research can be authorative.
First I have to decide why I choose those researches.

4/23/2009 Resource reflection

1. How did you find your resources?

I visited library website and then wen to article&database. After log in, I researched, using work "Facebook", "Social network," "Employer." Then, I narrowed it by type-such as magazine, journal, or newspaper.

2. How you research alter you idea?

Research makes my idea more detail, and clear through some examples and opinions.

4/20/ 2009 image assessment

It is very interesting option that Facebook provides. People can find other person to carpool with them in order to save money and enviornment. The meaning of Social networking is getting broader. It can be one evidence to support Facebook makes people connect more an more people.

4/20/2009 Newspaper Article assessment

The newspaper article, "Putting Yourself Out There on a Shelf to Buy" by Alina Tugend in New York Times states people who recently want to get a job makes their image as a brand through social networking site, Facebook. The number of Facebook users are incredibly expanded so that more and more people use it not just as a individual's small garden but a definition who one really is. That is, people use it to sell themselves to their potential employer.

4/20/2009 Journal assessment

The journal, "The Newest Way to Screen Job Application: A Social Networker's Nightmare" by Carly Brandenburg from Federal Communication Law Journal can be the support for a research paper about Facebook. It focused on employer's tendency, looking for employee's background in Facebook. It highlights some privacy issue, but it also can be used as an evidence of Facebook's impact on an employment.

4/20/2009 Magazine article assessment

The article "Fogeys Flock to Facebook" by Aaron Ricadela in Business Week Online on Aug/07/07 describes the trends of high-technology people's participation in Facebook. Facebook not only stands for individual user but at the same time, for people in real business world. This article can be the good supports for how facebook helps one's social network, not on the line of person to person, but person and representative of one organization.

4/20/2009 Book assessment

The article "The Technology Slaves (783)" in the book, "Investing Argument" by John Mauk and John Metz states some bad things of technolgy- especially, the internet. The author Ross Wheatley claims people are seriously affected negatively by using internet and what side effects accompany with- financial cost.

It can be used a counter argument of the research paper that claims why people participate to the Facebook. If this article insists financial costs which people spend in order to obtain technology is getting bigger, the reserch paper can say Facebook tends to prevent the wasting of time and financial cost, too.

It will be highlighted on financial cost using internet, and how the Facebook prevents it.

4/09/2009 Narrow Thesis Statement

Social Networking

What benefits it brings on? How it works? Why do we have to concern?
-People can know and get a relationship with strangers.
-Employer can check their potential employees.
-Keep in touch with so many people in a short time, not directly meeting or talking on the phone.

Not
-Someone that I don't like can know me.
-Upleasure pictures or other contents can be disclosed
-Have a just light relationship

why people use Facebook instead of other tools? There are risks that people can be disclosed their private information, but people still use it. why?

4/9/2009 Theis statement draft

Thesis statement: Facebook, the efficient social networking tool, threatens users' privacy by its policy, weak security, and facebook itself.

4/9/2009 Wikipedia assessment -Facebook

Description about the Facebook in Wikipedia is detailed and well- orgarnized. In addition, Wikipedia visitors are available to look over information about the Facebook Inc briefly. It is a good start to most of people who want to know about it, yet Wikipedia article is not one hundred percent trust worthy. First, the source of article comes from a knowledgeable individual, not a reliable source such as a research center, an expert, or a government. Second, there is no specific filtering to judge the content of article is true or not. Misinformation in Wikipedia can be fixed by the individual who have right to fix it- usually, the first writer- only when the readers complain about the article. Last, Outdated contents are sometimes in Wikipedia article. Updating have to be occurred frequently, but nobody has a responsibility for it. After reading the discussion, the article of Facebook also includes outdated and wrong information. For example, the number of users and revenue of Facebook are outdated. Moreover, the article said people in Iran are blocked to use Facebook but in a discussion, the Iran user claims that is not true.

For social network and privacy, Criticism part and some Litigation cases can be used. Criticism describes what privacy matter is issued recently, and Litigation specifies what cases have been treated by court until now. The writer states where the source comes from-links it with its original source- so that I can follow and confirm them.

4/5/2009 social networking assessment

-Note details about the entire site & Describe it briefly.
Facebook is the social networking service through the internet. Basically, it provides members a page such as a blog, and each member can make a relationship through the friend request to a person that they want to know. The most new things is that member can make a new relationship even if they don’t know each other well. After that, the status of “Friends” which you have relationships through the Facebook blog is displayed. At a Home screen, members can upload pictures, videos, and some links that they are interested in. Profile menu have wall menu that friends can leave a message, info menu that host’s sex, birthday, e-mail address and education work, and photos menu has pictures that the host upload. Friends menu lists people who have a relationship with me and some people who have common friends with me or common education work but they are not friends with me yet. Inbox menu works like e-mail. Anyone who knows each other can send a message to his or her friend or read it in inbox. Member can search his or her friends easily, typing name or e-mail address. The most interesting thing is that Facebook also have messenger, working only inside of Facebook website. When a member finds his or her friends are connecting Facebook, he or she can talk to a friend in real time through the messenger.

-Assess how it used
Facebook is used broadly for a connection between people and people. In addition, more and more people can get to know each other by its provided tools. The page it gives a member becomes the mean to express him or herself. Then, people open their pages only to the people who are friends. Searching system and “people who you may know” can make people connect a new relationship very easily.

-Assess who used it (based on the other users)
Legally, it is available to whom are 13 years old or older and 18 years old in high school or in college or adults, aged more than 18 years old. Recently, not only individual use it but also business people use it as a representative of their company. Not only US people but also worldwide people join in.

-Assess what it represents to the users
“Connection” is the goal of Facebook’s. It shows what Facebook is made for. A page that Facebook provides is the space in order to express who individual really is, and people have connections by those pages. Posting individual’s feelings, tasks, photos, videos at one’s page, and comment to other pages are all of things that member can do.

-Assess if it’s useful or not (answers the why or why not)
It is very useful in recent lifestyle. People are busy and they can’t afford every people they know. If friends, professors, co-workers, club members, and relatives are in Facebook, people can keep in touch and have a new relationship without extra time. In a short time, the connection can be maintained. Real time chatting can make people do multiple tasks while they talk each other.

-Assess if private information about a user is apparent
Yes, user’s information is clearly displayed in profile menu between friends. The users know each other’s real name, and e-mail address. Of course, there are host’s photos available.

The recent change of Facebook’s policy is criticized harshly. At this point of view, its policy about private information is not appropriate. The most criticized one is that Facebook has a right to all of members’ contents- pictures, videos, and writings- even though member doesn’t want. Surprisingly, Facebook still has a right about past contents after the member termites the service. It means member doesn’t take any benefit at all if Facebook sells some contents and earn money. In addition, Facebook use the contents wherever they want even though member doesn’t agree with it. Protection about private information is required by its users now.

4/2/2009 Assesing technology article

Article "Chemical Persuasion", by Aldous Huxley is the authorative source because it presents each drugs's use and their objectives based on the assumption that can happen. Also, the author gives the exact name of drugs that have developed by technology and what changes are accompanied by those.

3/31/2009 Three sources evalutation

First one of sources that I evaluate is the youtube video, titled "Your Technology culture - BCC &Internet Privacy." While I was watching the video, I found what the BCC option of e-mail stands for. It was very interesting because I even haven't tried to use the option that hides receivers' e-mail address. Also, people who don't know what BCC option is can get information why they use it. Yes, showing my e-mail address to other people who don't know me is not a pleasure thing; because probability of spam mails tends to be increased if my e-mail address is exposured to other people. BCC option is a kind of internet manner.

Second, the article "Mobile Security: Saying Yes When You Really Should Say No" makes me reconsider about the mobile security (http://www.technewsworld.com/story/66531.html.) It is very useful source for the mobile phone users becuase it describes the risks at every single situation. The article seperate each problem and explain how it is prevented. When I send my informaion using my mobilephone, it can be stolen by hacker through the server. Or some program requires permission to access my informaion when I download them but it always accompanies the risk of stealing. I can't exactly know what information they need and where it is used for. Especially, users of smartphone like blackberry and iphone have to be aware of these risks. Confidential information should be protected, and I think it can be accomplished by mobile phone user's attention.

Last one is the post "Facebook's New Terms Of Service: "We Can Do Anything We Want With Your Content. Forever,"" by Chris Walters (http://consumerist.com/5150175/facebooks-new-terms-of-service-we-can-do-anything-we-want-with-your-content-forever). I like this post, and it shows which part of policy is the problem that we have to consider. I have an account and sometimes update my picture on my facebook. Before Dr. Katherine D. Harris mentioned about the changed policy of Facebook, I didn't know at all that my contents is not mine. It's just scary. Even though I close my account, and remove my contents-pictures and writings; Still Facebook has the right to use it which way they want. We can ask a question to them. "Where is my privacy?" "Is it legal?"

2/24/09 Authoritative source

From http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-rally30-2009jan30,0,1801547.story
By Howard Blume and Jason Song
January 30, 2009

Teachers who oppose the CA education budget cuts, approved by Schwarzenegger and the L.A. Unified superintendent, gather L.A downtown and rally to rise their voices. The rally starts from Beaudry Avenue to the nearby Reagan State Office Building. They ciriticize the budget cuts and worry the consequences- layoff teachers, larger classes, and less assessment for students.
As a response for the rally, the state government issue a statement, saying there is no choice but only tighten its belt because of the economic downturn.

2/24/09 Interview - CA education budget cuts

I interviewed my roommate, Soo H Ahn who is 28years old and an international student from South Korea. Ahn has spent over 7years in the U.S from language school, and community college to San Jose State University, she is attending right now. Because of the facts, she becomes a one of the most suffered people by California education budget cuts.

Hye S. Han( H): Please tell me about your life in California as a student.
Soo H. Ahn(A) : It’s very competitive. Many students study so hard. The California residents have a strong passion of education, so most of schools have high standard education level. I hope I can graduate soon.

H: Ok, for 2009, there are education budget cuts of California, you already know. Do they affect your life although you are not a California resident? If they do, what changes occur?
A: Yes, I think it affects a lot. I pay 3tims more tuition fee than resident because I am not a California resident. Moreover, I need to pay more in this year because of the education budget cuts of California. Actually, I paid over $7,000 for 15 units.

H: Do you have any expectation to the California government for reducing education tuition?
A: Of course I hope the California government should reduce the education tuition for all students, especially for international students. I am scary a lot because the education fee will go up again.

There isn't any weapon discovered like President Bush claims; Evidence

Critics toward the President Bush's plan; Tone

...

2/19/09 Politics summary

I read "No Troops Surge in Iraq."

Marcy Kaptur, Ohio-Rep., has a speech that she supports the resolution.
She describes what situation the U.S. military and the U.S. government confront now,
and how the U.S. is looked like to the world, including Islam government and citizens.
She doesn't agree that the present President Bush's plan is working efficiently, and he will
get nothing but only bad reputation and worse conflict. Terrorism toward the U.S will be growing
if the resolution is not passed.

2/17/09 how does Obama persuade people to believe in and follow him?

Barak Obama, as a 44th president of United State of America, has an inaugural speech on Jan.20, 2009.

Barak Obama emphasizes the people's unity under the name "America" to persuade people to believe in and follow him . He knows well many of problems that he has to reform as a president exist, and his work is needed citizens' supports. For obtaining the supports, Obama has to appeal to citizen's patriotism. He mentions what the ancester did for America, and what "we" have to do for next generation. Listing lot of problems that America faces, including harsh economy , terrorism, and poor policies makes people feel sympathy with him but he, at the same time, gives people confidence that only Americans - we -can solve the problems as a leader of the world. Therefore, the inaugural speech shows Obama's confidence, passion, and intention of solving the issues as a president of United State of America, like the ancestor did.
